Year 11

As we approach the final week of this half-term, I feel that this is an opportune moment to reflect on what has been a successful and busy start for Year 11. With the GCSEs now firmly on the horizon, it has been pleasing to see the large majority of our students adopting a mature and committed approach to learning, which will eventually see them reap the deserved rewards next summer.
I wish all of our students and parents a lovely half-term break. When the students return, they will have two weeks before their Mock Exams start, therefore, they should also be using half-term to revise and make sure that they are suitably prepared for this important series of mock exams.

This half-term, we hosted our Year 11 Preparing for Success Evening, which was a well-attended evening as parents received crucial information about their child’s GCSEs, as well as talks from the English, Maths and Science Departments. This was all designed to make parents aware of how they can help support their child at home and feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive.
Last week, Year 11 also had their Careers Day, and once again the feedback was extremely positive. I have included a paragraph below from one of the external providers, who spoke very highly of our students:
The event was really well organised by you and the students were all well prepared. Above all, all the students were engaged, interested and motivated to ask lots of questions and find out about courses. They were articulate and polite and showed your school in a really good light - they were a real credit and I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations I had with them today.
Feedback such as the above is always pleasing to receive but it highlights that our students are really beginning to have the clarity and vision that we expect them to have. During this day, students attended targeted talks and also had the chance to speak to a range of external providers ranging from, colleges to apprenticeships to businesses.

This has been our students’ first experience of Period 6 and it has run extremely smoothly. Attendance at these sessions remains extremely high – at the time of writing, our average attendance at Period 6 stands at 95%, although we have had several days where attendance has been higher. We are still awaiting our first 100% day and I know that this will happen in the very near future!
Period 6 will continue to run after half-term, initially for two weeks. There will be a 2 week break during students’ mock exams and then Period 6 will commence again up until the Christmas holidays. As a school, we feel that these sessions continue to have a positive impact on students and therefore, we want to maximise every opportunity we have with them. Below is a reminder of the current Period 6 schedule:
Tuesday – Maths and MFL
Wednesday – English, Business, CIDA, Computer Science and Media
Thursday – Science, Art and Technology
Friday – History, Geography, PE, RS and Music

This is another area that has seen students engage and make vast improvements in their core subjects of English, Maths and Science. Each week, students are completing Subject Knowledge Tests and this has really enabled students to see basic areas where they need to improve. Furthermore, it has been really pleasing to see students with the appropriate revision guides during tutorial and last week’s Science Knowledge Tests saw a dramatic improvement from all forms since the first test was completed in September.
These Knowledge Tests are something that will be continuing throughout the academic year. Therefore, if your child does not currently have a revision guide(s) for Maths, Science, English Language and English Literature, I actively encourage you to purchase them as they will help to support your child.

Next half-term, we have a couple of key dates for your diary, as well as an important set of mock exams for Year 11. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at both events. Further details about these two events will be announced after half-term.
