Welcome to my blog.
We have had a fantastic first week back here at Beckfoot Thornton.
It was lovely to see the smiling faces of our students, who looked refreshed and ready to learn!
Earlier this week, students in Year 7 were involved in a road safety assembly. It was really interactive and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Students in the 6th form took part in a 'Young drivers and passenger safety' session on Wednesday. We hope that they have taken on board the key messages from the session and become confident, safe road users!
I was really pleased to discover that over 10% of our students in Year 11 have signed up to the National Citizenship Service, which will run over the summer, after they have completed their exams. Students' will develop their independence, resilience, leadership qualities, social skills and future ambitions.
Some students in Year 10 have been working extremely hard with a University PhD student, as part of their work with The Brilliant Club.
They have each written a 2000 word essay answering: “To what extent would you agree that the term ‘Classical Music’ is outdated, misleading and misrepresentative of a contemporary art form that still thrives in the 21st century.” As a result of their efforts and successes, they will be congratulated during their trip to Newcastle University on the 3rd May.
Today, I was really impressed. Our 6th form students who have been undertaking their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) had to present the findings of their project to myself and other members of staff.
The range of subjects that have been covered was very interesting, ranging from the use of anabolic steroids, to abortion, to the impact Covid 19 has had on businesses in West Yorkshire. The students were extremely professional, had researched their chosen subject well and executed their presentations perfectly. Well done to everyone involved.
I am very pleased to advise that we are returning to in-person parents' evenings, starting with the Year 7 parents' evening which is on Thursday the 26th of May. Further information about how to book appointments will be sent to families closer to the time. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone in-person again.
The exams are getting closer for students in Year 11 and Year 13. Please encourage your child to continue with their revision and attend period 6 if they are in Year 11 and are allocated to do so.
I hope you have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend and that those who are celebrating over the coming days have a fantastic Eid.
School re-opens at the usual time on Tuesday the 3rd of May.
