Sports Leadership Academy

A warm welcome to the Beckfoot Thornton Sports Leadership Academy!  This is a well-established group of Year 9 and 10 students who lead, deliver and officiate a variety of sport related activities and competitions as part of the national ‘School Games’ programme funded by the Youth Sport Trust.  School Games Organiser Mr Painter supports and guides Sports Leader students to assist in curriculum and extra-curricular activities here at Beckfoot Thornton in addition to the 40+ West Bradford School Games Primary and Secondary events running throughout the academic year.

The overall aim and ethos of the Academy is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their leadership through positive sporting experiences.  This is achieved by working with a range of people such as members of staff, communities and school groups.  The combined outcome is for students to develop the skills, work ethic and confidence to making them more employable in the future.

For the recruiting process, PE Staff and Heads of Year nominate potential Sports Leaders who are approaching the end of Year 8 for consideration in joining the Academy.  Nominees then attend a presentation and complete an application form if interested.  Successful nominees take home a ‘letter of agreement’ which is signed by a Parent/Guardian.

Sports Leaders are identified in Red creating a team who feel unified with a unique sense of belonging within the Academy.  Students in Year 10 are offered the opportunity to gain the nationally accredited Level 2 Sports Leadership UK qualification which can go on their CV as a reward for their commitment to the Academy.  Throughout the year sports specific workshops are delivered by the likes of the Football Association, the Yorkshire Cricket Board, Golf Foundation, Rugby Football Union and the Lawn Tennis Association in conjunction with relevant competitions to increase Sports Leaders’ knowledge and officiating skills.

There are meetings every Monday (Year 10) and Tuesday (Year 9) with training sessions each half-term for existing Sports Leaders and new students are always welcome to join.  If anyone has any questions about the Sports Leadership Academy, please email Mr Painter at
