One Trust Culture Day at Beckfoot Thornton

This week, Beckfoot Thornton was buzzing with excitement as we hosted our Beckfoot Trust Culture Day.
The inspiration behind the One Trust Culture Day stems from invaluable feedback gathered through listening sessions with students across all Trust schools. During these sessions, students expressed a strong desire to learn more about each other’s cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. The result was a day designed to promote understanding, inclusivity, and respect—key values that are at the heart of the Beckfoot Trust’s ethos.
We celebrated our rich diversity while fostering an environment where students can learn from one another. It was an opportunity for everyone to gain a deeper appreciation for the wide array of cultures represented in our school, and to continue working together towards building a stronger sense of belonging and mutual respect. Through activities, discussions, and shared experiences, students were able to reflect on their own identities while learning about the backgrounds of their peers.
Celebrating Diversity in Every Classroom
On Wednesday, April 2nd, students engaged in an “identity circle” lesson in their form groups, reflecting on their personal identities and learning about the diverse backgrounds of their peers. This was followed by a special assembly that explored culture and diversity within the school, featuring a staff-made video discussing the identities and cultures of our teachers.
Thursday, April 3rd, saw staff incorporating discussions on culture and diversity into lessons across all subjects, with some teachers continuing these lessons throughout the week. These sessions encouraged students to reflect on their own experiences and gain new insights into the experiences of others.
Interactive Stalls and Cultural Showcase
The excitement continued on Friday, April 4th, as students had the opportunity to visit interactive stalls set up in the school hall. These stalls showcased different cultures from around the world, offering students a chance to explore traditions, customs, and histories. In addition, the extended version of the Trust’s Culture Day video was shown, further enriching students’ understanding of the event’s themes.
In a show of solidarity and respect for the event’s ethos, students and staff wore clothing that represented their unique identities, symbolizing the school’s commitment to inclusivity and mutual respect. The canteen also played its part by offering a differentiated menu, providing students with the opportunity to taste a variety of foods from different cultures.
Building a Stronger Sense of Belonging
The Beckfoot Trust Culture Day was not only a celebration of the school’s rich diversity but also an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions and activities that foster a sense of belonging. Through reflection, shared experiences, and an emphasis on learning from one another, the event helped strengthen the school’s commitment to building a more inclusive and respectful community.
As school closes for Easter, we want to wish all students and staff a wonderful break, and we look forward to welcoming you back on 22nd April.
