Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Beckfoot Thornton is an inclusive school that celebrates diversity and believes all students should be equally valued and treated with respect. We are committed to creating an environment where no child is left behind. Our aim is to ensure that students with SEND access a curriculum which ahs breadth and balance, providing them with opportunities to succeed. We also want them to participate in the wider life of the school so they can showcase their skills and talents.

It’s important that all students are provided with the right support so they can enjoy, learn and succeed. We have, as part of our provision, a school led Resourced Provision called the Lighthouse, for students with Education Health Care Plans that have severe learning difficulties. 

The young people who attend the provision have been allocated by the Local Authority, who maintain responsibility for admissions.Pupils in our Resourced Provision access 100% of their learning within the provision. They are taught by subject specialist teachers from the mainstream school who tailor the curriculum to meet individual needs. This environment allows pupils to benefit from highly personalised teaching approaches, smaller class sizes and targeted support. The pupils access specialist classrooms as required, e.g. Food Technology, Music.

Accessibility

Beckfoot Thornton takes account of its responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Code of Practice 2014. We do not treat disabled pupils less favourably than others, and we will always take reasonable steps to avoid putting disabled pupils at a substantial disadvantage. There is an Accessibility Plan to increase the ability of the school to cater for the needs of the disabled pupils.

Parents/carers are invited to inform school of any disability that could prevent or impair their child’s full participation in school life. If we are made aware of any problems, we always try to make alternative arrangements to overcome any difficulties.
