Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Assessment

Assessment at Beckfoot Thornton

To support students in knowing and remembering more at Beckfoot Thornton, assessments are designed to:

  1. Assist teachers in planning by identifying gaps so teaching can be adapted and interventions identified – assessments are diagnostic
  2. Provide students with feedback that they can act upon so they can know more and remember more
  3. Provide information for parents or carers on students’ progress and their learning

Internal assessments and exams

Our students are assessed in internal assessments and exams twice per year, in two of our three academic cycles. All of our assessments are cumulative; this means that they assess students on what they have learnt recently, and also during previous years in school. By doing this we are taking advantage of the spacing effect – by returning to knowledge at a later date, students are more likely to know and remember it. It also builds in progress and reinforces the importance of our key knowledge set out in our knowledge organisers, which can be found here: Learning Dashboards

. It will also support families in helping their child(ren) prepare.

Following each assessment period, staff will spend time carefully planning lessons and activities to close any gaps in knowledge, plan interventions and tailor lessons to meet students needs.

Details of assessment periods will be shared via the Headteacher's newsletter so that you can best support your child. Following each assessment about how your child has done will also shared with families.
