Key Stage 5 Maths and Science Leaders
My name is Mr Peter Dolan, I am interim Director of post 16. During the academic year 2019-2020, I am running the key stage 5 Maths and Science Leaders programme. This is available to both year 12 and 13 students who are studying Maths or Science respectively, their involvement in the programme will give them experience of working with young people in a classroom environment.
The students will be involved in offering support to students in one lesson of their chosen subject. Maths leaders will also be involved in Period 6 with year 11 students supporting learning and working with individual students. Maths leaders will also have the opportunity to run a puzzle club for year 7 students; designing puzzles and delivering the sessions. In formal lessons the student leaders will support small groups of students working closely with the classroom teacher. In addition, there will be an opportunity to support a lunch problem solving group working with students in year 10 who are trying to solve high level problems.
As a student leader they will:
- Gain experience of working with young people from different abilities in different settings
- Improve their confidence
- Improve communication skill
- Improve their organisation skills
- Work as a team with the class teacher
- Work using their own initiative and ideas
This opportunity will provide the students with valuable skills and also provide evidence for personal statements when applying to universities.
