Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Future Ready Learner

We want you to be someone who is excited about what their future could hold and knows how to get ready for it.

At Beckfoot Thornton, we have the highest aspirations for our students, and we are committed to providing high quality, careers guidance which will ensure that they fully understand the range of opportunities available to them for life after secondary education. Beckfoot Thornton regularly evaluates its Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance programme to meet the needs of the Gatsby Benchmarks. We also receive feedback from students, parents, staff and employers. By doing this, we hope that we will have a 0% NEET figure (Not in education, employment, or training) or close to it within the next 3 years (end of academic year 2024-2025).

In order to ensure that our students are Future Ready Learners, we have identified the following strategic objectives which will form the priority for improving careers provision over the next three years:

Strategic objective 1:

The careers programme will ensure that careers in the curriculum are embedded within lessons and that staff are supported with implementation.

Strategic objective 2:

The careers programme will ensure that students have experienced the world of work in a range of industries and learn how employability skills are transferable.

Strategic objective 3:

The careers programme will ensure that all students have meaningful encounters and experiences with further and higher education providers to raise student aspirations.

Why our school believes this is important:

Students will be able to understand how what they are learning links to a career and how skills they develop are transferable.

Staff will be confident to have conversations with students about future aspirations.

Why our school believes this is important:

Students will be able to experience what a working adult life is like and know how to take ownership of making decisions that are right for them.

Why our school believes this is important:

Students need to be aware of different post-16 and post-18 providers and be made aware of the different levels of qualifications. Students will be able to visit some of these providers to enthuse the students to aim high.

What are the Gatsby Benchmarks?

The Gatsby Benchmarks were developed on behalf of the Gatsby Foundation by Sir John Holman. They define what world class careers provision in education looks like and provide a clear framework for organising the careers provision at a school or college.

The 8 Gatsby Benchmarks are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from careers and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each student
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

The careers programme at Beckfoot Thornton

Our careers programme is designed to meet the needs of all students within our school and will be measured against the Gatsby Benchmarks and links to the Career Development Institue (CDI) Framework. The careers programme is continuously being updated; with new provisions being implemented throughout the year.  In addition to the whole year group entitlements, we offer targeted programmes for selected students, helping create a meaningful programme that fully meets the needs of individual students.
